Steampunk Angel Pincushion

Steampunk Angel Pincushion

Tracy here with my latest OTP creation

A steampunk angel pincushion based on a dress form pattern.
I found this awesome online video which gives the basic pattern - and I used this to trace out my pieces. Then it was just a matter of sewing them together, stuffing them with cotton wadding and embellishing.

To make mine I went to the $2 store (second hand stores are also a good place to hunt for these) and picked up a wooden handy towel holder as the base for my angel. Taking my Tim Holtz Gears Die (BTW hopefully we will have them in stock by end of next week) I cut out a series of gears from a pizza box lid. Using the gears as a mask, I placed them over the fabric and sprayed them with Jack Frost Glimmer Mist and Tattered Leather Glimmer Mist. I then stitched the fabric pieces together and flipped them inside out so that the stitching was on the inside. After stuffing, my angel was all ready to go.

Not wanting to waste my gears, I added to them using some Tim Holtz Walnut Stain Embossing Powder, which I just randomly applied. To finish off my 'gear wings' I popped on a Antique bronze Large Flower Filigree (which I cut in half) and one of our Blue Gardenias

To get the colour on the metal of the filigrees, I wiped Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium with fingers (hey its all about getting dirty ah?) and once dry I sprayed with Jack Frost Glimmer Mist

Before adding the Gardenias I put them onto a piece of acetate and sprayed them with some Jack Frost Glimmer Mist to deepen their blue colour and swooshed them onto the left-over Tattered Leather Glimmer Mist that remained after I had sprayed the gears. This gives them their 'aged' look. The gears and other bits are all hot-glued to the dress form.

For the base I used the Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium again, which both seals the wood and acts as a glue. Working quickly whilst it was still wet, I added some small washers, coffee brown seed beads, a few more pizza box gears, another blue gardenia, a couple of 2cm roses (both altered with left over bits of glimmermist and embossing powder - they were really handy at cleaning up all the mess) and a pair of petite closed brown rose buds . Another coat of the Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium went over the top of everything to help seal it all to the wooden base.

Around her neck I added a length of antique bronze iron chain, with some randomly added 6mm aqua pearls and 6mm dark brown pearls and one of our new Angel Wings with Clock Key Charm. She was very popular at the recent Scrapbooking Expo up in Brisbane, with a number of people commenting on her.

If you are interested in making your own, check out the video and head off to your local Spotlight for some cheap calico type material. Just don't forget to pop into my2angels for all your embellishing elements.
